Ever thought of changing your legal name?
You wouldn’t be alone. Getting one’s name changed is more common than you might think.
Some people do it when they get married or get a divorce. Others do it to give their name to a stepchild. Still others do it to make a nickname a legal name.
Unless the change is tied to a marriage or a divorce, a legal name change in Oklahoma needs a special petition filed with the court.
So keep reading. When you’re ready for a new you, call Joe Norwood for a consultation at 918-582-6464.
Why?
There are numerous reasons people give for legally changing their names.
They may be seeking protection from someone who abused them. They may be named for a lawbreaking relative and want it changed.
One of our clients wanted to take the name of his deceased father. Others want to make a familiar nickname their legal name.
“People have all kinds of reasons,” said Joe Norwood.

Unallowed
Who cannot seek a name change in Oklahoma?
You cannot do it to escape debt collectors or commit fraud. You cannot do it to hide criminal convictions. You cannot be required to register as a sex offender.
Said Joe: “Distancing from the past is something the law doesn’t favor for name changes.”
Under Oklahoma law, you’re eligible for a name change if you’ve resided in the state for more than 30 days. A guardian can seek a name change for a minor.
Help
You don’t legally need an attorney to get your name changed. But you don’t legally need a window installer to install your home windows. You’d probably still turn to a professional for installing your windows.
If you recruited Norwood.Law for a name change, we’d request a hearing and file a petition with the court, and we’d post a required public notification.
Another step in the process would be retrieving a birth certificate from the state where you were born.
Be aware that silly or inappropriate names like cartoon characters are strongly discouraged by Legal Aid Services of Oklahoma.
If the judge grants your request, you’ll need a certified copy of the order to get your social security and driver’s license changed.

Joe Norwood’s record says it all.
