Insurance behemoths profit by not paying

Vicky Weidner’s home in South Tulsa was pummeled by a storm in 2024.

When she needed the help she’d already paid for, it wasn’t there. State Farm Insurance refused to pay one penny for her damage claim.

The Wall Street Journal recently reported on Weidner and what happened to her. The Journal says Weidner is far from the only homeowner to be denied in recent years by major insurance corporations that refused to pay after disasters struck.

The cost of a new roof for Weidner could reach as high as $50,000.

She shelled out $10,000 a year for 10 years to State Farm for home insurance, Weidner says.

But not only did they deny her claim, State Farm even dropped her from its insurance coverage.

Florida blues
Three insurance corporations in 2023 didn’t pay out on nearly half of their claims while operating in the state of Florida, according to the financial ratings company Weiss Ratings.

State Farm, for example, denied over 46% of its claims.

Weiss found two years later that 14 insurers in Florida closed one of every two claims without paying anything. All of these companies closed a much higher percentage of claims than even one year before.

Said the founder of Weiss Ratings, Martin Weiss: “What’s most surprising of all is that some of the companies in Florida with the highest denial rates do have the financial strength to afford to pay a much larger portion of their closed claims.”

Weiss adds: “After paying far higher premiums and suffering widespread storm damage, this is like a punch in the gut for Florida homeowners. … Before I buy or renew a policy, I absolutely need to know what the chances are that I could get stiffed when I file a claim and how strong or weak the company is.”

Texas blues
Texans could just go outside after Hurricane Beryl in 2024 to directly observe the damage it caused.

But insurance corporations operating in Texas might instead decide that damage to your home was “pre-existing.” This is one of many ways for an insurance titan to make more money at your expense.

Almost 47% of insurance claims from Texas homeowners in 2023 alone were closed without payment. That’s a staggering increase from recent years. Then the Houston Chronicle in 2025 showed that some insurers were denying more than 60% of claims following damage.

What’s happening here?

  • More catastrophic events are occurring in Texas.
  • Damage is often now classified as “pre-existing.”
  • Insurance corporations may deflect and delay.
  • Texas politicians passed a law weakening punishments for insurance companies that wrongly denied claims.

Ohio blues
One Ohio family’s home was damaged during a major storm. But the insurance giant State Farm, a $132 billion company, agreed to only pay for three roof shingles. It was far from what the homeowner was expecting.

But we know now that insurance corporations have been working hard to flip your premiums into a profit.

The homeowner in Ohio told news station NBC4:

“I paid my premiums. … What I really want is just some explanation on what to do and I’m just frustrated. … Total helplessness is what I feel.”

But you don’t have to be helpless. Don’t be scared of a corporation just because it’s a corporation. You have a right to fight.
